Deewang beaming

Curriculum Vitae

Hello, this is Deewang (pronunciation)! I am a Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Carleton College.

My research interests lie in arithmetic geometry and algebraic number theory. My research interests also lie in undergraduate and graduate mathematics education. I am passionate about mathematics pedagogy, and communicating mathematics to a general audience.

I obtained my Ph.D. in Mathematics from UC Santa Cruz in California under Martin Weissman, where I received a full-year Dissertation-Year Fellowship. I obtained my M.S. in Mathematics from the HSE University in Moscow, where I wrote my master’s thesis under Vadim Vologodsky; and I obtained my B.S. in Mathematics, with a specialisation in applied algebra, from Shiv Nadar University in Delhi NCR.

I am a member of the Silver ’26 cohort of Project NExT. I received a Curricular Innovation Grant at Carleton College to develop a course on Error-correcting Codes for the Winter 2027 term.

I subscribe to the following (updated) axioms by Federico Ardila, which first appeared here:

  • Axiom 1. Mathematical potential is equally present in different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries.
  • Axiom 2. Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences.
  • Axiom 3. Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs.
  • Axiom 4. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

These statements should not sound revolutionary, and considering the current practices of the mathematical society, they are a pressing call to action. — Prof. Ardila
